1. Weekly posting of time-based work on your blog
10% of your grade
Between each class meeting post at least 1 time-based work on your site.
The posting should represent compelling work (to you) and a written response to the work
must be included.
You should keep an open mind when looking for works. Website links and artists names will be discussed each class so take notes to keep an ongoing list.
These explorations will be graded mid-semester and the last class.


             The response should include:
  • Title of work, artist name and date
  • Describe what the piece is about and how the imagery and sound create these impressions
  • Detail the artist/director approach to narrative; how is the story being told?
2. In-class exercises
10% of your grade
Save all technical experiments done in class. Archive on the Department server AND another source. These explorations will be graded mid-semester and the last class.
Your active exploration is essential to our investigation of equipment and software.


3. DVD portfolio
10% of your grade
You will create an interactive portfolio that is cohesively designed. The portfolio will include all your projects along with written statements about the works.


4. In-class quizzes
5% of your grade
Quizzes will be given to evaluate your comprehension of technical, aesthetic  and concept comprehension.


5. In-class work assessment standards
5% of final grade
Your participation and engagement as well as your ability to use class time effectively
is crucial to the dynamic of the class.


6. Four Projects
60% of your final grade


Project 1 Sound/Memory
15% of final grade
Create a 3-minute sound project that addresses memory.
Due February 8



Criteria:
1. All sounds should be recorded by you.

2. Must use voice as one sound.
3. Use ambient location sound to give context.

Project 2: Sound / Image Sequence
15% of final grade
Create a 1 minute still-frame video using your own source imagery (still photos) and sound from previous project. Explore a completely new /different idea from your sound recordings as you investigate sound/image relationships.
Due: March 15

Criteria:

Research Photographers whose work includes series-based and narrative-based work
and explore different ways to tell a narrative using images/sound.
2. Storyboard three ideas to present to faculty
3. Shoot high quality and vast (your contact sheets should include at least 250 images) amounts of still images on your subject/theme. 
4. All images must be shot by you for this project.
5. The dominant sound must be project 1.
6.
Export the video as an MPEG-4 (H264) and post on class blog

Project 3: Animation 15% of final grade
Create a 3 minute animation using methods introduced in workshops/lectures.
Explore a different narrative approach than your project 2.
Due: April 5

Criteria:

1. You may use found imagery as long as you modify it. See fair use policy link
2. Storyboard two distinct ideas to present to faculty including sound and image connections.

3. Shooting options
A. ROTOSCOPING: Manipulation of individual frames. Can include color keying and masking. Shoot footage with
DV camcorder (SD)
B. CUT-OUTS:
Create physical images/objects that move, shoot the animation using DV camcorder (SD) and modified camera stand.
4. Process:
- Storyboard – as complete as possible
- Collect all materials for your animation.
- All sound must be recorded and modified by you.


FINAL ANIMATION:

Export the video as both a .mov / quicktime and a MPEG-4 (H264) and post on class blog. Explore different compressors for best quality output.

Project 4: Video
15% of final grade
Create a 3 minute video that explores point of view and narrative in a which that you haven't previously.
Due: April 26







Criteria:

1. Use video footage you shoot yourself.
2. Use titles, 7 seconds black, title, piece, 3 sec. credits.
3. Storyboard two distinct ideas to present to faculty including sound and image connections.
4. Devise a method to demonstrate time passing (using reality or fabrication).
5. Incorporate an animation or  series of photographic stills in the work.
6. Collect all materials for your shoots.
7. All sound must be recorded and modified by you.
8. Export the video as an MPEG-4 (H264) and post on class blog.
